En8D steel bar is a medium carbon steel grade of engineering steel that offers greater strength and hardness as compared to the low carbon grades. The formability and weldability of En8d are fair when using accepted shop practices. While machinability is good, this grade responds very well to forging and heat treating. It is one of the most used grades of carbon steel. People requiring better properties such as strength, etc generally go for alloy steel if En8d or equivalent grades are not suitable.
Typical applications of En8d steel round bar include gears, shafts, axles, bolts, studs, crane wheels, and machine parts.

EN8D can be tempered at a heat of between 550°C to 660°C (1022°F-1220°F), heating for about 1 hour for every inch of thickness, then cool in oil or water.
Normalizing of EN8 bright mild steel takes place at 830-860°C (1526°F-1580°F) then it is cooled in air.
Quenching in oil or water after heating to this temperature will harden the steel.
Heat the component slowly to 820-860°C and allow it to be heated through. Quench in oil or water.
Temper the EN8D component immediately after quenching whilst tools still hand warm. Re-heat the EN8D component to the tempering temperature then soak for one hour per 25 millimeters of total thickness (2 hours minimum) Cool in air. For most applications tempering of EN8D will be between 550-660°C.

Preheat the steel carefully, and then raise the temperature to 1050°C for forging. Do not forge below 850°C. After forging cool slowly, preferably in a furnace.
Normalizing of EN8D bright mild steel takes place at 830-860°C (1526°F-1580°F) then it is cooled in air.
Heat slowly to 680-710°C, soak well. Cool slowly in the furnace.
Modern EN8D bright mild steel contains a lot less carbon than it uses to, this means that it is possible to weld pieces up to 18mm thick without preheating using MIG wire (SG2) or a 7018 electrode.
Over 18mm would require a pre-heat of 100°C (212°F) in order to prevent cracking.
Anneal afterward is recommended to prevent breaking.
